Summary

From Daniel Silva, the internationally acclaimed #1 New York Times bestselling author, comes a riveting new thriller featuring art restorer and legendary spy Gabriel Allon。

It was nearly one a。m。 by the time he crawled into bed。 Chiara was reading a novel, oblivious to the television, which was muted。 On the screen was a live shot of St。 Peter’s Basilica。 Gabriel raised the volume and learned that an old friend had died …

Gabriel Allon has slipped quietly into Venice for a much-needed holiday with his wife and two young children。 But when Pope Paul VII dies suddenly, Gabriel is summoned to Rome by the Holy Father’s loyal private secretary, Archbishop Luigi Donati。 A billion Catholic faithful have been told that the pope died of a heart attack。 Donati, however, has two good reasons to suspect his master was murdered。 The Swiss Guard who was standing watch outside the papal apartments the night of the pope’s death is missing。 So, too, is the letter the Holy Father was writing during the final hours of his life。 A letter that was addressed to Gabriel。

While researching in the Vatican Secret Archives, I came upon a most remarkable book …

The book is a long-suppressed gospel that calls into question the accuracy of the New Testament’s depiction of one of the most portentous events in human history。 For that reason alone, the Order of St。 Helena will stop at nothing to keep it out of Gabriel’s hands。 A shadowy Catholic society with ties to the European far right, the Order is plotting to seize control of the papacy。 And it is only the beginning。

As the cardinals gather in Rome for the start of the conclave, Gabriel sets out on a desperate search for proof of the Order’s conspiracy, and for a long-lost gospel with the power to put an end to two thousand years of murderous hatred。 His quest will take him from the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, to a monastery in Assisi, to the hidden depths of the Secret Archives, and finally to the Sistine Chapel, where he will witness an event no outsider has ever before seen—the sacred passing of the Keys of St。 Peter to a newly elected pope。

Swiftly paced and elegantly rendered, The Order will hold readers spellbound, from its opening passages to its breathtaking final twist of plot。 It is a novel of friendship and faith in a perilous and uncertain world。 And it is still more proof that Daniel Silva is his generation’s finest writer of suspense and international intrigue。

Daniel Silva is one of my favorite suspense authors。 I've read all of his books and reviewed most。 The Order is a good, interesting book, but different from his others。 It takes place almost entirely in Italy, and in Rome。 The Pope dies and Gabriel Allon is called in by a Vatican friend to prove it was murder。 The book is light on suspense and the normal Gabriel Allon action, and very long on Vatican and Papal history, particularly its anti-semitic past, particularly its links to the Nazis, the Daniel Silva is one of my favorite suspense authors。 I've read all of his books and reviewed most。 The Order is a good, interesting book, but different from his others。 It takes place almost entirely in Italy, and in Rome。 The Pope dies and Gabriel Allon is called in by a Vatican friend to prove it was murder。 The book is light on suspense and the normal Gabriel Allon action, and very long on Vatican and Papal history, particularly its anti-semitic past, particularly its links to the Nazis, the early church, the history of biblical texts, the rise of neoNazi groups in Europe today, and the various "apocryphal books" that never made the Bible。 Interesting, all true, but a little "preachy。" It's obvious that Silva had something he wanted to get off his chest and this time it wasn't a good suspense novel。 Bill Brown 。。。more

I wouldn't have thought it was possible to do a cut and paste of an entire novel but I assumed I was reading Angels and Demons with a new cover。 I was waiting for Ewan McGregor to parachute into the Sistine Chapel but Gabriel Allon would have intervened anyway。 Too close, Mr。 Silva。I've enjoyed Silva's other works apart from his persistent complaints about Arabs and Palestinians in particular。 Likewise reminders of The Holocaust。 Yes, there was a Holocaust and it was terrible and Holocaust denie I wouldn't have thought it was possible to do a cut and paste of an entire novel but I assumed I was reading Angels and Demons with a new cover。 I was waiting for Ewan McGregor to parachute into the Sistine Chapel but Gabriel Allon would have intervened anyway。 Too close, Mr。 Silva。I've enjoyed Silva's other works apart from his persistent complaints about Arabs and Palestinians in particular。 Likewise reminders of The Holocaust。 Yes, there was a Holocaust and it was terrible and Holocaust deniers are mentally unstable, but I don't want it to be part of each story。 My personal belief is that Israel has brought most of its problems down on itself since 1948 and Gabriel Allon's pride in hunting down and executing Munich terrorists is misplaced if we go back to the reasons Palestinians took that rather drastic step as a reaction to Israeli terrorism。 Leave it out of the book, Daniel。 。。。more

As usual, Silva’s prose is great, his pace is fine, and his characters are fun。 This novel broke me out of a seven-novel run of low-star thrillers。

We’ve met Pope Paul VII before: Daniel Silva’s fictional successor to John Paul II, he has survived several assaults on the Vatican, all thwarted by Israeli master-spy Gabriel Allon。 Holidaying in Venice when His Holiness dies of a supposed stroke, Gabriel is invited to investigate the possibility that the pontiff was murdered by enemies within the Church who are plotting to manipulate the conclave that will elect his successor。 A secret gospel has been discovered in the archives which could und We’ve met Pope Paul VII before: Daniel Silva’s fictional successor to John Paul II, he has survived several assaults on the Vatican, all thwarted by Israeli master-spy Gabriel Allon。 Holidaying in Venice when His Holiness dies of a supposed stroke, Gabriel is invited to investigate the possibility that the pontiff was murdered by enemies within the Church who are plotting to manipulate the conclave that will elect his successor。 A secret gospel has been discovered in the archives which could undermine Catholicism’s foundations。Alternative gospels and dark doings in the Holy See have provided fodder for historians and many other writers of fiction (including Dan Brown – twice!)。 There was much speculation that John Paul I, Pope for only 33 days in 1978, was murdered by rogue cardinals; this theory provided part of the plot of Francis Ford Coppola’s third Godfather movie。Outlandish as it ought to be, The Order has the ring of believability; it’s almost as pacy as a Bond film。 This is the most enthralling thriller I’ve read since Gabriel Allon’s previous misadventure and is unlikely to be equalled until his next one。 。。。more

A history lesson in catholic theology!Another wonderful episode in the life of Gabriel, the older, wiser and less physically agile than the earlier version。 In this work we receive a history lesson in the tortured relationship between the origins of the Catholic Church and the story about the Jewish inspired crucifixion of Jesus。 Another splendid read by Silva。

Well written and compelling, as always。it's just unfortunate that, in order to address anti-jewish bigotry, the author has engaged in anti-christian and anti-catholic bigotry。it's also disappointing that he has resorted to parroting the same old anti-christian tripe that people have been trotting out for decades。 Well written and compelling, as always。it's just unfortunate that, in order to address anti-jewish bigotry, the author has engaged in anti-christian and anti-catholic bigotry。it's also disappointing that he has resorted to parroting the same old anti-christian tripe that people have been trotting out for decades。 。。。more

a propagandizing tour de forceWe all have our 1st world problems, mine is choosing this “Marxist tome” as my first Daniel Silva book to read。 Are all his books Ludlumesque paeans to socialism?

I really, really liked this book。 Very had to put down but this is pretty much how I feel about of Silva's Gabriel Allon series。 A blurb somewhere said it was like Jason Bourne meets The Da Vinci Code but I found it to be much better than either of those books and much more readable than Da Vinci Code。 I really, really liked this book。 Very had to put down but this is pretty much how I feel about of Silva's Gabriel Allon series。 A blurb somewhere said it was like Jason Bourne meets The Da Vinci Code but I found it to be much better than either of those books and much more readable than Da Vinci Code。 。。。more

I loved this book! This is my first Daniel Silva book and about halfway through I looked at the library to see what was on the shelves and borrowed 4 'Gabriel Allon' stories。The common character is Gabriel Allon in a collection of books who is a spy and a friend of the Pope。Delving into the behind the scenes workings of the Vatican and its influential reach beyond the Catholic church。 (This is fiction 。。。 right?)I don't want to give anything away 。。 but I recommend this book for anyone who enjoy I loved this book! Huge disappointmentAlthough it started out well, its absurdity increased exponentially towards the end。 The only redeeming part of this book was that it articulated the evils of religion, and the decision by its adherence to believe in such nonsense。

{3。5 stars}The Order is a story that imagines an underground Catholic network who are trying to sway the election of a new pope。 I like stories like this, ones that take just a slight tweak of real life and show you just how things could be。 I really liked the main characters and the complexity of the ethics that drove their decisions。 I liked the deeper delve into the politics between Catholics and Jews and how a few little words could change everything。 I was hoping for a Dan Brown-like story {3。5 stars}The Order is a story that imagines an underground Catholic network who are trying to sway the election of a new pope。 I like stories like this, ones that take just a slight tweak of real life and show you just how things could be。 I really liked the main characters and the complexity of the ethics that drove their decisions。 I liked the deeper delve into the politics between Catholics and Jews and how a few little words could change everything。 I was hoping for a Dan Brown-like story with this one, it had all the knowledge and intrigue… But it just lacked the pacing for me。 There were sections that were overly long with detail about things I felt were not necessary to move the story forward。 Generally a book like this I can read quite quickly… But I sort of had to force myself to read so many pages a day to keep it moving。 I really enjoyed the first third and the second third but the middle was a bit of a slog for me。 The ending was really great and even as a devout Catholic I could enjoy this book for its entertainment value and wholly appreciated the author’s note to that effect。Thanks to Harper Collins for a copy of this novel。 All opinions above are my own。 。。。more

Another author using their audience to espouse a political position。 It must be fun to fictionalize history。 I did not know Silva took lessons from Dan Brown。 I enjoyed most of his previous works。 It is about time the author moved on from Allon。 Maybe Silva is stuck。 Cannot develop a new character。 Allons children are not old enough to be spys。

This was my first book of this author and I really enjoyed the writing style, I also liked the story, the pacing and I know this is the 20th book in a series but I didn't had any problem reading it as a "stand alone"。 The reason why I gave 3 stars is because even with the interesting plot and with the amount of historical facts ( some of them created by the author as he says in the end of the book ) - I didn't had any exceptional reaction, I finished the book with a neutral feeling。 But I was lo This was my first book of this author and I really enjoyed the writing style, I also liked the story, the pacing and I know this is the 20th book in a series but I didn't had any problem reading it as a "stand alone"。 The reason why I gave 3 stars is because even with the interesting plot and with the amount of historical facts ( some of them created by the author as he says in the end of the book ) - I didn't had any exceptional reaction, I finished the book with a neutral feeling。 But I was looking for some spy/intelligence book and it fitted perfectly。 。。。more

Honestly, I needed this book to be more like the cookie cutters of some of the past in the series。 I needed action and escape, instead I got more hatred and corruption taking control of the world。 It isn’t that the book is bad - as always it is well researched - it just was too much reality for me right now。
